CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Rose Lalonde
AGE: As of the epilogue, she's in her 20s.
CANON: Homestuck

CANON HISTORY: Her wiki page!
CANON PERSONALITY:

TT: Consider this your first lesson in showmanship.

Initially, Rose Lalonde seems to be an eloquent, rational young woman out of her group of friends. Her refined appearance is accentuated in her introductory page, in which the narrator talks about her interests in "rather obscure literature" and psychoanalysis. Her sylladex is an "elegant" tree modus--unwieldy but pleasant to look at--and she's one of the few characters in the webcomic to type with perfect syntax and grammar. Her vocabulary rivals that of her ectobrother; it's apparent with her friends when she banters with them and through the extremely thick style in which she writes the SBURB guide in.

Early in the webcomic, Rose appears to be one of the most composed players of SBURB. She's quick to recognize the danger John is in and works to save his life against the clock without panicking. In the doomed timeline, she's dedicated to staying the course for as long as possible, all for the sake of passing on information. Barbs thrown at her by the trolls are met with dry jabs dabbed with a good heaping of sarcasm, often sending those who challenge her scurrying away. When confronted by monsters at the game's beginning, she's quick to jump into the fray. Her conversations with her friends typically wind up with her picking apart at their utterances, seeking the deeper meaning and implications. It appears as though little will ruffle her feathers. She must be one of the most rational players, the ideal kid to take on the role of Seer--!

TT: Mr. Strider, have you considered that what you actually dread is to have your urban rhythms exposed for what they truly are, which is, clinically speaking, just shy of ‘da bomb’?

Not quite. Though one may assume Rose is a reserved and elegant girl, the truth is all her fancy prose is just for show. She's unafraid to engage in long-winded tangents with Dave, trades fond jokes with John, and conspires with Jade about making a top-secret birthday present. For all her big talk, she can be remarkably silly and over-the-top. She literally rolls through her home in an effort to avoid her mother, pretends a 'w' is a mustache, enjoys teasing her friends (especially Dave), and takes precious time to ride a pony she fondly calls "Maplehoof."

How Rose acts is a reflection of what she'd like to be. Composed, collected, and mysterious -- it wouldn't be a stretch to say that she'd love to be one of her wizard characters in her short stories and the impression she gives off is merely a branching off of her hobbies. Psychoanalysts must be aloof and knowledgeable. A girl who enjoys reading about eldritch horrors should be unknowable. That isn't to say she doesn't have such traits. Rose does have a tendency to isolate herself from her friends, to size up the parameters of a situation in a split moment. But she definitely is a lot softer and sillier than she would like to admit.

This is extremely apparent in her relationship with her cat, Jaspers. When asked by Jade whether she had a cat she loved, her response right away is to deflect by claiming her feelings were "lukewarm." Yet she interrogates her further on what she meant by Jasper returning and, upon learning the method would be tied to SBURB, later pesters Dave relentlessly to play with her. When Jaspersprite is finally prototyped, she grills him on his purpose before admitting that he was "a good cat" and that she missed him.

Perhaps it’s the deplorable romantic in me, but I thought your present, and your friendship, demanded reciprocation surpassing by some degree the utterly meaningless.

Which brings us to our next point: Rose is fiercely devoted to those she cares about and is willing to go to great lengths for them. She plays coy upon receiving John's gift but instantly works on a present that'll give him as much joy. Though she understands what makes her friends tick, her psychoanalyzing never goes beyond playful teasing -- her intent is to goof around, never to hurt them.

And upon learning of the Tumor plaguing their unwinnable session, she right away sets about to tearing apart the session to learn how to cheat in order to achieve victory. Though she's constantly warned of the recklessness of her actions, she does not falter from her path. Whether it's cowing her consorts into obeying her, incinerating hordes of monsters, or tearing the game apart brick by brick, Rose is someone who does not and will not yield. Especially not when the lives of those she cares about are on the line.

TT: I came away with the impression from our last conversation that our next would take place on your invitation.
TT: I was being polite by waiting.
Doc Scratch: Your inevitable impatience caused you to contact me again.
Doc Scratch: Inevitability is my invitation.

Which leads us to her faults. Composed as she may initially appear, Rose is arguably the most reckless out of her friends. Despite the questionable nature of the horrorterrors and the creepiness of Doc Scratch, Rose is willing to play their games. In her mind, she's on a level playing field, an equal to them. If they possess the higher ground, she'll claw her way to them. She's well aware of the stakes -- and she doesn't care. Danger is something she can handle. If the deck is stacked against her, she will bend it to her advantage.

All of this can be traced to her childhood. She admits to Jade that she always felt that her mother gave up a greater purpose in order to raise her; that, for all their passive-aggressive fights, she reluctantly respected her. There's a constant struggle between the two to one-up each other, be it through words or gestures. Rose can never do enough -- she can never be enough. Though there are hints that her mother's gestures may be genuine, Rose ultimately sees every action as a challenge. She has to be better, has to be more than she is in order to rise to the vague yet lofty expectations she feels on her shoulders.

Rose lives in the shadow of her mother and this is alarmingly apparent following her death. The loss of her guardian resulted in an overwhelming mixture of guilt and rage -- guilt at her perceived cowardliness and inability to do; rage at the one who dared to murder the one she loved. Though she'd been attempting to consider all angles of the situation, she allows herself to be infected by grimdarkness and flies off to partake in a suicidal mission to fight Jack Noir. This wound isn't healed for a very long time, a regret she carries with her on the journey to the new universe.

Haven't your friends already shown concern for your recklessness and your increasing sense of detachment from the party, the team objectives, and not to mention those of your personal quest?
Does this worry you? Is there a part of you left that's able to worry?
TT: Yes. It has been mysteriously localized to my middle finger. Could the dark magics be at work AGAIN?!

Rose's desire to come out on top manifests in a rather contentious attitude. While her friends receive the softer sides of her personality, she can be frighteningly cold to strangers or those she cares little for. When pestered by Eridan who was seeking a fight, she's quick to blow his computer up in a display of her magical prowess. She's blunt and cold towards Doc Scratch and it's demonstrated in her many battles that she isn't afraid to be downright brutal in her fighting style. While she's happy to engage in silly shenanigans with her pals, those who irk her receive a frosty demeanor that's difficult to pierce.

Ultimately, Rose is an intelligent young woman unafraid to dabble in the darker parts of her psyche or in the unknown, someone who is willing to do anything for those she cares about.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

☀ GOD TIER: SEER OF LIGHT
Rose has achieved the status of god tier, which grants her conditional immortality. If her death is considered "just" or "heroic," she will permanently die. If her death cannot fall into either categories, she will revive immediately.

As the Seer of Light, Rose is able to know "the Most Fortuitous Path" -- aka, what decisions will result in the best outcomes. She is also granted enhanced magical vision which basically means she'll have an easier time interacting with things that require magical prowess.

Also she can fly. Wheeeeeee.

☀ SYLLADEX
All Homestuck characters possess an inventory called a sylladex. It's a form of hammerspace in which many items can be stored. Rose utilizes the tree fetch modus, which is explained here.

☀ DARK MAGICS
Prior to attaining god tier, Rose possessed dark magics granted by the Horrorterrors. This essentially allowed her to cast bolts of dark energy, to cast telekinetic magic, and to generally blow things up. When succumbing to grimdarkness, she is surrounded by a massive aura of dark magic.

☀ COMBAT ABILITIES
While fighting is not highlighted as one of her interests, Rose is easily one of the strongest fighters out of the Beta Kids. An ogre that took John time to defeat was easily taken out by Rose, who slammed her knitting needles into its eyes. She isn't afraid to fight dirty and her style can be summed up as "ruthless."

It's also hinted that she's quite nimble, given how she youth rolls all over the place.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Rose Strider
AU AGE: 17
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Hazel eyes instead of purple! She's the same otherwise \o/

AU HISTORY:
☀ Born in Texas on December 3rd with Dave Strider as her twin. Dirk Strider and Roxy Strider are her older siblings. When she turned 8, the family moved to Recollé. Contrary to her brother, she does not possess an accent -- though she can definitely bring it up for the sake of dramatics.

☀ She was sent to the same school as her brother. Their first day resulted in them becoming friends with Jade Wolf. The trio are as thick as thieves!

☀ Rose has adopted her mother's love for the arts. She's practiced ballet with Dave from an early age and is a virtuoso with the violin. She's also an excellent knitter and enjoys making plushes.

☀ Extremely close with her family. Though she and Dave are the same ages, she considers herself the "middle child," the one responsible for looking out after her twin and her older siblings. This doesn't mean, however, that she isn't willing to get into a little trouble for them every now and then...

☀ Has a Tumblr, which focuses on horror. She has a few online friends. She's also submitted a couple of short stories to anthologies. None have been accepted, but she's determined to break through.

☀ Very studious. She enjoys going above and beyond when it comes to projects and she serves on the student council as their treasurer. Rose has a bit of an intimidating reputation which she likes to play up but once you get to know her she's not as bad as she seems.

☀ Around freshman year she began volunteering at an animal shelter. That shelter was where she found a giant black maine coon she affectionately nicknamed "the Beast." The cat's true name is Maple.

AU PERSONALITY:
Where Rose Lalonde picked apart at every interaction to see what the "true" meaning was, Rose Strider is a teenager who openly embraces her family. She cares deeply for them and, having been raised in a rather loving environment, her canon counterpart's cynicism gives way to a more mischievous streak. Rose is aware that she comes off as aloof and distant to strangers. As someone who doesn't care much about what other people think, the distance is something she enjoys as it gives her an easier time in messing with people.

Furthermore, she's a lot more straightforward about her emotions. This doesn't mean she's ready to drop down and have a feelings jam, but it does mean that she's more open to admitting when something bothers her and is more likely to actually talk to people when something is upsetting her. Rose knows she can rely on her family. If something gets too big, she can count on them to have her back.

But, hey, that competitive streak is still there. Regardless of the task, Rose still enjoys a good challenge and can't turn down a dare. Trouble is what she eats for breakfast.
